Marian Young and Mark Lannan Awarded
2008 Delaware Small Business Persons of the Year

Marian Young and Mark Lannan, co-owners of BrightFields, were honored as the Small Business Administration’s 2008 Delaware Small Business Persons of the Year for the State of Delaware. The award is based on the company’s staying power, growth in employment and sales, financial performance, innovative services, response to adversity and contributions to the community.

Each year SBA’s 68 district offices across the country recognize their outstanding state small business owners and champions at local Small Business Week events. The winners then compete with other state winners in their respective SBA regions to determine the 10 regional award winners who then compete for the national award in their respective categories. The 50 state small business persons of the year compete for the title of National Small Business Person of the Year at SBA’s National Small Business Week activities in Washington on April 21-23.

New Destiny Fellowship Church Awarded Brownfield Grant

Bethel Temple CDC, The New Destiny Fellowship Church, was awarded a $200,000 US EPA Brownfield Cleanup Grant that will allow them to finish the demolition and remediation of the former Wiley Cork site located on 16th Street in Wilmington. BrightFields is proud to have been able to support New Destiny in receiving the only 2008 EPA Brownfield Grant in the State of Delaware. The funds from this grant along with continued support from the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control, which has provided significant Brownfield funding to assist in the environmental cleanup of the Wiley Cork site, will allow this property to be remediated and redeveloped. The Wiley Cork site, a cork manufacturing plant in operation throughout much of the 1900s, ceased operation in the 1990s and left tank cars, drums and process lines filled with materials. Additionally, the land that the cork plant was on had been historically filled with materials not safe for future users of the property. BrightFields has been assisting New Destiny Fellowship Church in the cleanup of this site for 3 years.

BrightFields, Inc. is hosting a Child Safety Day on Saturday September 8, 2007 from 9am – 4pm. At this event we will have the City of Wilmington Police Department with a booth discussing stranger safety and giving tips to both parents and children on how to stay safe. These kits include a photo ID card and a CD with encrypted records that hold a photo, a voice recording and streaming video of the child, as well as other personal information to help identify a child quickly and accurately in the event of abduction. The information on the CD can be quickly disseminated to all law enforcement agencies in the area, helping to save precious minutes in the search for the missing child.
